Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest
As you begin planning your next get-a-way, think about spending some time with nature. Most of us are surrounded by stresses, technology, life’s constant demands, which can cause us to forget about the beauty that nature has to offer. Hiking is a something that almost anyone of any skill level can do and is a great way to get yourself out in the woods. It’s soothing to your soul and will bring much peace of mind. Right here on the Hidden Serenity bed and breakfast property we have an excellent trail through 24 acres of woods. But if you are looking to do a longer hike there are some fantastic trails not too far from us. Just a short drive and you will be on your way in no time.
The Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in located approximately 45 minutes north of Milwaukee and only 5 minutes form our B&B. Visitors will have plenty to explore at this state park, with over 30,000 acres of rolling hills, lakes, forests and grasslands and plenty of wildlife. This park is perfect for a day hiking trip. As it becomes warmer it also features three swimming beaches, one at Mauthe Lake and two at Long Lake that also offer picnic tables, grills and public restrooms.
There are several hiking trails to explore. The Butler Loop is close to Long Lake Recreation area and is a shorter hike of 3 miles through Butler Lake and Flynns State Natural Area.
Another trail that might be of interest is the Greenbush Loop System that has a combination of four loop trails totally 9 miles. This is a popular trail among hikers as well as off-road mountain bikers. This loop features a heated picnic shelter, grills and drinking water as well as restrooms.
If you would like a couple of more challenging options, check out the New Fane Loop System with trails totaling 5.5 miles that are for moderate skill levels or the Ice Age Trail that is approximately 31 miles and travels the length of the forest. These two options are the closest to Hidden Serenity.
Whatever you decide, there are plenty of options for all skill levels as well as ages and a great way to enjoy our beautiful natural surroundings as you take time to get away from the craziness life brings day to day. At Hidden Serenity Bed & Breakfast we are here to help you forget the stresses and find that inner peace and calm. Just book a room, come prepared to hike and we will help you plan the day. The best part at the end of the day is coming back to our beautiful, comfy rooms and putting your feet up as you savor the moments with your loved one.

Maple Syrup Making
Here is a fun fact you may not have known about us. While relaxing at Hidden Serenity Bed & Breakfast, you will wake up each morning to a hot gourmet breakfast. Many mornings feature our very own all natural maple syrup made from maple trees on our property. That’s right. We make our own maple syrup for our guests to enjoy.
Making maple syrup is an interesting, simple process. The most common type of maple trees that can be tapped are Sugar, Black, Red and Silver maples and with the right equipment it is a fairly easy process. The best time to tap maple trees for their sap is in February and March where sap flows when daytime temperatures rise above freezing and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing. To tap a tree you want to drill a hole 2 – 2 1⁄2 inches deep, inserting a spile into the drilled hole. It should cause the sap to immediate begin dripping into a bucket for collection.
To begin making maple syrup from the sap, you will boil the sap until it takes on a golden color and reaches the correct reading on your hygrometer. After you are finished with the boiling process then you can filter to get rid of any sediment. Now you are ready to bottle your golden delight and make those pancakes. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of syrup. You could continue to boil the sap even further to produce maple cream, maple sugar and maple candy. The whole process is time consuming, but our family here at Hidden Serenity B&B enjoys working together and savoring those final results. And to top it off we get to share it with our guests!
Here at Hidden Serenity we believe everyone needs time away to recover from life’s stresses and distractions calling our name from every direction. Book with us today and enjoy a relaxing stay in our luxury rooms. Get back in touch with nature and your loved ones…and have some maple syrup along the way.

Guys on Ice – Not What You Would Expect!
It seems like there are two kinds of people living the West Bend area when it comes to ice-fishing. Those who like to get out on the ice to ice-fish, and those who like to laugh at those who are foolish enough to endure the cold for the chance at a few fish when the stores are full of fish products.
While Hidden Serenity is in an excellent location for either type of person and lots of laughing and loving, the Kettle Moraine Players will be specializing in the latter with the humorous production of Men on Ice.
While the name may make the event sound like a figure skating competition or a hockey game, Men on Ice is actually an ice-fishing musical. The Lang Auditorium which is locally known as the Campbellsport High School Theater will host this production on February 6th, 7th and 8th for a weekend of fun shows.
Following the Sunday show, the Kettle Moraine Player will move the production to the City of Hartford for the February 13th and 14th weekend. The Schauer Arts and Entertainment Center near downtown Hartford is a beautiful venue to enjoy a musical and also features the famous Mineshaft Restaurant as a place to visit before the show for dinner or after the show for an evening drink.
At either venue the show is sure to bring laughs to the audiences that are fortunate enough to watch the show. The only question is will you laugh until your stomach aches or will you laugh until you cry? Either way it will be a fun night and you can see the show on either weekend.
The Kettle Moraine Players maintain a website at: kettlemoraineplayers.com/upcomingshows.html
And, if you were hoping this would be about really getting out to go ice fishing, we can arrange the opportunity for that as well!
At Hidden Serenity you will find extremely comfortable beds and luxury showers, as well as a hot gourmet breakfast that varies every morning. Make this a romantic getaway with your significant other by adding a night at the theater. A good laugh is good for the soul!
Throw a Little Theater in During Your Winter Stay
A quaint theater can be found on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Washington County in West Bend just west of highway 45 and South of Highway 33 on University Drive. During the Winter months of 2015 two fun shows will be taking place, one a play and the other a concert.

On December 31st, 2014 there is a buffet available prior to the play. The 2015 showings take place on January 2, 3, 9, 10 and 11. Treat yourself to some serious laughing at this amazing play.
Later in the month, the music group “Close To You- Music of the Carpenters” takes the stage at the UW-Washington County Theater. Honoring the music group, founded by Karen and Richard Carpenter.
