10918102755_6e641e2382_mDo you remember the days when entertainment consisted of picnics in the park on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon with the entire family enjoying each other’s company without the distraction of devices such as cell phones, tablets, computers and video games? If you are too young to remember, then we are sure at the least, you have heard about them.

Let us take you on a journey back to a simpler time, a time where communication didn’t consist of a text message from your loved one or an email seeing how things are going. Let us take you back to a time of the red and white checkered table cloths, picnic baskets, frisbees and kites. A time where the fresh air and scenery, smells of picnic foods, flying a kite and just basking in the sun were more than enough to refresh your tank and keep it running.

Hidden Serenity Bed and Breakfast is surrounded by such an abundance of beautiful lakes, trails and parks in our area, the perfect location for an old fashioned picnic with the family. We will prepare a gorgeous basket of goodies which includes a bottle of non-alcoholic bubbly, checkered table cloth/blanket, frisbees and kites along with other fun nostalgic gems for your day. We will send you off to a secluded, romantic spot, chosen just for you. We have several hidden, secret picnic spots to suit your liking.

An old-fashioned picnic! What a romantic way to spend a sunny afternoon with your special someone. Book with us today to reserve your picnic basket.

The Wade House and Carriage Museum

wade03The Wade House. A Wisconsin historic adventure for you and your family where you will return to a time of stagecoach travel. The Wade family came to the area back in 1844 and settled in a place they felt had potential. They were the first permanent settlers in Greenbush and when they came there was mainly dense forest though they were along a well-used stagecoach trail. By the time Wisconsin became a state in 1848, the village was growing very fast and had two stores, a school, a sawmill, wagon shop, blacksmith and a doctor.

The Wade’s house, at the beginning, included a small tavern and by 1848 it became a regular stop for stagecoach lines which led to the family building a new, elegant inn to serve the growing need. This inn prospered for over a decade then with the coming of railroads, the town growth began to stall and eventually one of the Wade’s grandson’s sold the inn.

Eventually the inn fell into the hands of Marie Christine Kohler in the 1950’s with plans of restoring the Wade House, bringing the 100 year old building back to life. The property is now owned by Wisconsin Historical Society and opened to the public in 1953 as the society’s second historic site.

On site, there is also a Wade House Visitor Center that opened in 2013 as well as the Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum. This 38,000 square foot facility is home to Wisconsin’s most extensive and diverse collection of carriages, sleighs, and wagons. The Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum contains 70 horse and hand-drawn vehicles beautifully displayed in appropriate historical /interactive settings.

Lizard Mound County Park

Stay at Hidden Serenity and enjoy Lizard Mound County Park. Sure, us Wisconsinites love our cheese, milk, golfing aEffigy Moundsnd fresh maple syrup though there is so much more to us. Not only do we have those cool things, we also have Lizard Mound County Park.

So what exactly are these mounds? We are glad you asked. Way back in 500-1000 A.D., Native American mound builders who hunted, fished as well as gathered wild plants to survive moved around often as they were in search of their next meal. During their stay in areas if someone passed away they would build burial effigy mounds in shapes of mammals, reptiles, birds and other animals that were sometimes real and other times mythical creatures. The effigy mound builders usually buried their dead in small pits or laid them on carefully prepared surfaces. The effigy mounds were then built over them like grave markers. Sometimes a humble object such as a cooking pot or an arrow was included in the mound, but more often no grave goods were left behind at all. It’s pretty amazing after all of these years that they have kept their shape thanks to preservation organizations. Wisconsin has more effigy mounds than any other region in North American, somewhere between 15,000-20,000 with at least 4,000 remaining to this day.

Hidden Serenity Bed and Breakfast is only a mile away from the Lizard Mound Park which features 28 effigy mounds out of 60 that were at one time present. At this park, there is one incredible lizard mound you won’t want to miss seeing that is hundreds of feet long, just one example why this park in particular is known as one of the largest most diverse effigy mound areas in Wisconsin that is open to the public.

This is just one more activity you can do when staying with us at Hidden Serenity Bed and Breakfast! You will never be bored during the day and will have a nice ‘home away from home’ to come back to in the evening after your fun adventures! Don’t forget to book your reservation with us today!
