A Tasty Adventure at Widmer’s Cheese Cellar

There are a few things more “Wisconsin” than cheese, but cheese has certainly earned its place in the lexicon of our dairy-forward state. Wisconsin’s reputation as America’s Dairyland is well-earned, with its rich tradition of cheesemaking reflecting a commitment to quality and craftsmanship in every bite. From grocery stores to small cheesemakers around the state, it’s pretty easy to get your hands on some delicious Wisconsin cheese, too. One of our favorite local spots is Widmer’s Cheese Cellars in nearby Theresa, Wisconsin.

Cheese lovers around the world laud the exceptional quality and variety of Wisconsin cheeses. Local cheesemakers produce everything from robust cheddars to delicate camemberts, demonstrating how much cheesemaking has become an art form. If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to explore Wisconsin’s small communities and cultural history, cheese is a great way to do it.

Venture into local shops like Widmer’s Cheese Cellars, and you’ll soon discover that cheese, at least in Wisconsin, is far more than food. It’s a piece of our culture, symbolic of the state’s history and agricultural prowess. Today, cheese offers a direct connection to Wisconsin’s dairy heritage.

Visiting local artisans and cheese shops is just one more way to add an element of charm to your getaway at our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast. Our accommodations, often as full of character as the state’s cheese, provide a cozy retreat after a day spent meandering through cheese cellars and tasting rooms. Head to Widmer’s Cheese Cellar

It’s hard to go wrong when doing any kind of Wisconsin cheese tour, so long as you take your time to experience the time-honored cheesemaking traditions and the exceptional products made from it. One place to do that near our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast is Widmer’s Cheese Cellars. Widmer’s Cheese Cellars is about 25 minutes from us and is an iconic stop for lovers of Wisconsin cheese.

Widmer’s Cheese Cellars was founded in 1922 by Swiss immigrant John. O. Widmer and it’s been in the family ever since. After more than 100 years in business, they still stay true to their craft, emphasizing the quality of the product and a commitment to traditional cheesemaking techniques.

Though Widmer’s Cheese Cellars produces a broad range of cheeses, it is best known for its Brick and Colby cheeses, which are both made using methods that date back to the early 20th century. Though there are no tours of the cheesemaking facility, you can watch the action from afar! Widmer’s Cheese Cellars has a retail shop onsite, where you can not only purchase its delicious products but also watch the cheesemaking in action.

Witnessing these traditional techniques first-hand and tasting and purchasing the cheese right where it’s made offers a genuine connection to Wisconsin’s dairy culture. Whether you’re a cheese connoisseur or a curious traveler, Widmer’s Cheese Cellars isn’t the only great place nearby to enjoy Wisconsin cheese. A few more regional cheesemakers to consider include the following:

  1. The Milwaukee Public Market offers plenty of fantastic local cheeses, along with a host of other local purveyors. You should also consider the Wisconsin Cheese Mart, home to “the world’s largest selection of Wisconsin cheese.”
  2. Simon’s Specialty Cheese in Appleton, a little over an hour away, is home to some of the state’s best feta, mozzarella, and provolone. Visit their retail store to browse over 100 varieties of cheese.
  3. Not too far away from Simon’s is the Union Star Cheese Factory, the perfect place to taste freshly made cheese curds.
  4. Henning’s Wisconsin Cheese in Kiel offers a fascinating glimpse into the cheesemaking process. This family-owned cheese factory is known for its large variety of cheese types, including award-winning cheddars and unique flavors. Visitors can watch cheese being made and explore the museum to learn about the history of cheesemaking.

If you don’t have time to dedicate to cheese tasting, we recommend heading to the nearby Cedar Valley Cheese Store in Belgium. Just a short drive from our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast, this store offers an extensive selection of Wisconsin cheeses, including those from local producers. It’s a great place to sample a wide range of cheeses and purchase some to take home.
