Welcome to Wisconsin. Home of some of the most beautiful scenic hiking trails in the medwest and the Ice Age Trail is one of them. The Ice Age Trail is one of only eight National Scenic Trails and a premier hiking trail for nature enthusiasts—excellent for sightseeing, wildlife viewing and bird watching. The sweet serenity of the trail will have you forgetting all the stresses you left behind at home. This is an off-road trail where you will see a plethora for hikers and backpackers as they take in the beauty that we so easily forget as we are in our day-to-day hustle.
The Ice Age Trail offers more than 1200 miles of open trail, traveling through 30 counties, with hundreds of trailheads and access points all located along the fantastic, breathtaking routes. This trail follows hilly moraines, left here after the last glaciers that once covered the State of Wisconsin. When hiking you will see a mix of forest, prairie and rolling hills as well as some steep hills. Glacial features you may come across that are along the trail include kettles, potholes, eskers and glacial erratics. You can visit the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve to learn more information about the history of the fascinating glaciers along the Ice Age Trail. There are also several mammals that make their home in the forest that include red foxes, American red squirrel, white-tailed deer, porcupine and raccoons, among more. Several species of birds can be found as well and they attract bird watchers from all over. Hiking is FREE although you may need to pay for parking.
