Located South of Long Lake Recreation Area is a smaller, quieter lake that is fed by and drained by the Milwaukee River. Mauthe Lake has had a state park for many decades and the lake has the unique feature of no gasoline motors. That makes for a nice day at the lake for the person who wants a quieter experience.
Mauthe Lake is 70 acres in size with a maximum depth of 23 feet. The lake has good fishing for Bluegill and Largemouth Bass, both of which live well on the deep weed edge of the lake. Because of the shallowness of the lake, and the current from the river, the lake holds more fish per acre than you might expect from a 70 acre lake. There is a nice fishing pier along the hiking trail and there is good fishing in the river below the dam for Northern Pike using spinnerbaits. The water color is stained by the swampland upstream, but the water quality is good and fish from the lake taste good.
One nice feature of Mauthe Lake is that you do not need to have your own boat to enjoy the water. Parkview General Store rents rowboats, canoes and paddleboats for day use on the lake. You should inquire at the store in advance for availability of boats and life jackets, which are not just a good idea, but are required by Wisconsin law.
Mauthe Lake State park also features a walking trail, Tamarac Trail, which is really a fun nature walk around the lake. Be sure to load up on the bug spray a head of time! A day at the beach here is loaded with fun for all, great swimming, boating, hiking, tanning, fishing, picnicking, and more.
Mauthe Lake State Park has a variety of great features and can be accessed using the same state park sticker as Pike Lake, Long Lake or any state park in Wisconsin.
