Fall Birdwatching at Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin

There’s no shortage of great places to enjoy a quiet afternoon of birdwatching in Wisconsin, including right here at our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast. However, for a truly magnificent destination filled with a rich variety of birds, head to the beautiful Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin.

Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin is one of our favorite places to watch the annual fall bird migration. The Horicon Marsh is the country’s largest freshwater cattail marsh and one of the state’s best birdwatching destinations. It’s also an excellent place for hiking, biking, canoeing, and kayaking – and it’s just 30 minutes from our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast!

The Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin is truly an impressive site. About two-thirds of the Marsh is dedicated to the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, a swath of land encompassing 22,000 acres of Marsh and woodlands. Thanks to the protection of these pristine habitats, the Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin has remained one of the best birdwatching and wildlife viewing destinations in this part of Wisconsin.

More than 300 species of birds visit the Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin each year. Some live here year-round, but in the fall, the numbers swell as the annual migration south gets underway. A broad diversity of birds and wildlife call the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge home, including marsh-loving birds like ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, and more. Migrating songbirds also migrate through the area, delighting visitors with their songs each fall.

Most visitors to the Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin come to see the birds and wildlife, but there are certainly more great things to do at the Marsh. There are five miles of hiking trails through Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, including a 1,400-foot accessible boardwalk, that allow for fantastic bird and wildlife viewing.

Another great way to get up close and personal with to kayak or paddle around the Horicon Marsh Canoe Trail. You can rent boats at Horicon Marsh. They also offer guided boat tours offered seasonally from early May through mid-October. Cyclists can also enjoy the Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin as they ride along the Wild Goose State Trail that passes along the western edge of the Marsh.
