Gorgeous Fall Views from the Parnell Tower

Everywhere you turn in the months of September and October, you’re likely to be treated to spectacular pops of orange, yellow, and crimson as the bright greens of summer shift into the vibrant hues of fall. You don’t have to go far to enjoy the signature fall hues, but hiking to the top of the Parnell Tower in the Kettle Moraine State Forest is an excellent choice if you’re up for an adventure.

The Parnell Tower is found within the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, about 20 minutes from our Bed and Breakfast in Wisconsin. It’s the highest point in the forest, standing at an impressive 60 feet tall, making it a great place to view Wisconsin fall colors.

Once you climb to the observation deck at the top of the Parnell Tower, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the forest at your feet. On a clear day, you’ll also enjoy the rolling farmland surrounding it. You can see up to 25 miles in every direction from the top of Parnell Tower, offering a spectacular view of Wisconsin fall colors!

The hike to Parnell Tower is relatively short and rated as moderately challenging. The 3.5-mile Parnell Tower Loop Trail starts with a few stairs in addition to the stairs you’ll need to climb to reach the top of the tower.

You’ll want to make sure you climb Parnell Tower carefully, but if you do, the outstanding views are more than worth it. Don’t forget to bring a pair of binoculars – this is also a great time of year to enjoy the fall bird migration through the area!

Take a Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive This Fall

The Parnell Tower is a wonderful place to enjoy fall in Wisconsin, but it’s certainly not the only thing worth doing while visiting our Bed and Breakfast in Wisconsin. It’s not even the only thing worth seeing in the forest! In fact, taking a Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive is at the top of our list of fantastic things to do in the fall.

You can enjoy a Kettle Moraine scenic drive on its own or add in side trips while you’re there, including hikes to Parnell Tower and other sections of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail that run through this area. The northern unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is the largest and offers a fantastic opportunity to explore this unique forest’s beauty, variety, and geology.

The Kettle Moraine scenic drive will take you on winding roads through the prettiest swaths of this 30,000-acre forest. Along the way, you’ll see beautifully hued trees, rolling hills, and prairies – all remnants of the last glacial ice age that moved through and shaped this stunning area. Highlights of the Kettle Moraine scenic drive in the northern unit include the Henry S. Reuss Ice Age Interpretive Center, the Parnell Tower hike, and more hikes on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Instead of a Kettle Moraine scenic drive, consider biking through this colorful forest. It’s so close to our Bed and Breakfast in Wisconsin, and we offer e-bikes for rent for our guests. It’s a fantastic way to get out for an adventure with your sweetheart and enjoy a crisp and colorful fall afternoon in the forest.
