Maple Syrup Making

While relaxing at Hidden Serenity Bed & Breakfast, you will wake up each morning to a hot gourmet breakfast. Many mornings feature our very own all natural maple syrup made from maple trees on our property. That’s right. We make our own maple syrup for our guests to enjoy.

Making maple syrup is an interesting, simple process. The most common type of maple trees that can be tapped are Sugar, Black, Red and Silver maples and with the right equipment it is a fairly easy process. The best time to tap maple trees for their sap is in February and March where sap flows when daytime temperatures rise above freezing and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing. To tap a tree you want to drill a hole 2 – 2 1⁄2 inches deep, inserting a spile into the drilled hole. It should cause the sap to immediate begin dripping into a bucket for collection.

To begin making maple syrup from the sap, you will boil the sap until it takes on a golden color and reaches the correct reading on your hygrometer. After you are finished with the boiling process then you can filter to get rid of any sediment. Now you are ready to bottle your golden delight and make those pancakes. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of syrup. You could continue to boil the sap even further to produce maple cream, maple sugar and maple candy. The whole process is time consuming, but our family here at Hidden Serenity B&B enjoys working together and savoring those final results. And to top it off we get to share it with our guests!
